In light of this context, this paper discusses the changing role of teachers in equipping students to meet the needs of the 21st century. They take into account the importance of experiential learning, learner-centred practices and multidimensional assessments. Generally, the unequal access to technology, the fast pace of technological development, increasing professional demands and the consequent need for regular teacher development represent key challenges. The discussion shows that while technology can enhance access to educational opportunities it cannot replace the guidance, empathy and interaction of a teacher. The authors of the paper state that a teacher who continuously updates his/her knowledge, reflects on his/her practices and caters to the emerging needs in education can significantly contribute to developing competent, responsible and lifelong learners.
