Understanding Emotional Intelligence in Everyday Life

The capability of identifying one’s own feelings and those of other people, the emotional intelligence refers to something pretty simple in its definition. The current article using a conceptual-descriptive method of review of secondary literature tries to see the importance, relevance and actual use of emotional intelligence paper. It includes being conscious of one’s feelings, understanding them better and being able to cope with them, sensitivity to the feelings of others and managing one’s relationship. The relationship between emotion and psychological processes is examined in the Indian context with references to feeling in face-to-face communication, online communication, family and social relations, school and office life, negotiation and conflict, stress management, and decision-making. Earlier research on the emotional intelligence has found that it positively or negatively associates with academic and workplace outcomes. However, these studies differ in terms of theoretical perspective and method of assessment. The paper examines practical strategies to enhance emotional intelligence, such as self-reflection, active listening, empathy, constructive expression of feelings, openness to feedback and emotions. It also takes a look at the institutions and workplaces that foster social and emotional competence. Equipped with emotional intelligence, we don’t just resist or overpower negative feelings; on the contrary, we recognize and accept them, potentially using them to catalyze reflection and growth.
